1. *What's New

(Burke / Haggart)

What's new
How is the world treating you
You haven't changed a bit
Lovely as ever I must admit

What's new
How did that romance come through
We haven't met since then
Gee but it's nice to see you again

What's new
Probably I'm boring you
But seeing you is grand
And you were sweet to offer your hand

I understand adieu
Pardon my asking what's new
Of course you couldn't know
I haven't changed I still love you so

What's new
How did that romance come through
We haven't met since then
Gee but it's nice to see you again

What's new
Probably I'm boring you
But seeing you is grand
And you were sweet to offer your hand

I understand adieu
Pardon my asking what's new
Of course you couldn't know
I haven't changed I still love you so

2. *Never Let Me Go

(Livingston / Evans)

Never let me go
Love me much too much
If you let me go
Life would lose its touch
What would I be without you
There's no place for me without you

Never let me go
I'd be so lost if you went away
There'd be a thousand hours in the day
Without you I know

Because of one caress
My world was overturned
At the very start
All my bridges burned
By my flaming heart
You'd never leave me would you
You couldn't hurt me could you

Never let me go.. never let me go

Because of one caress
My world was overturned
At the very start
All my bridges burned
By my flaming heart
You'd never leave me would you
You couldn't hurt me could you

Never let me go.. never let me go

3. *How Long Has This Been Going On

(Gershwin / Gershwin)

I could cry salty tears
Where have I been all these years
I'm like wow like tell me now
How long has this been going on

There were chills up my spine
And some thrills I can't define
Listen sweet I repeat
How long has this been going on

Oh I feel that I could melt
Into heaven I'm hurled
I know how Columbus felt
Finding another world

Kiss me once then once more
What a dunce I was before
What a break for heaven's sake
How long has this been going on

Oh I feel that I could melt
Into heaven I'm hurled
I know how Columbus felt
Finding another world

Kiss me once then once more
What a dunce I was before
What a break for heaven's sake
How long has this been going on
How long has this been going on

4. *Sophisticated Lady

(Ellington / Parish / Mills)

They say... into your early life romance came
And in this heart of yours burned a flame
A flame that flickered one day
And died... away

Then... with disillusion deep in your eyes
You learned that fools in love soon grow wise
The years have changed you somehow
I see you now

Smoking and drinkin'
Never thinking of tomorrow
Nonchalant...
Diamonds shining dancing dining
With some man in a restaurant
Is that all you really want to know

Sophisticated lady... I know
You miss the love you lost long ago
And when nobody is nigh you cry

Smoking and drinkin'
Never thinking of tomorrow
Nonchalant...
Diamonds shining dancing dining
With some man in a restaurant
Is that all you really want to know

Sophisticated lady... I know
You miss the love you lost long ago
And when nobody is nigh you cry

5. *But Beautiful

(Burke / VanHeusen)

Love is funny or it's sad
Or it's quiet or it's mad
It's a good thing or it's bad
But beautiful

Beautiful to take a chance
And if you fall you fall
And I'm thinking
I wouldn't mind at all

Love is tearful or it's gay
It's a problem or it's play
It's a heartache either way
But beautiful

And I'm thinking if you were mine
I'd never let you go
And that would be but beautiful I know

Love is tearful or it's gay
It's a problem or it's play
It's a heartache either way
But beautiful

And I'm thinking if you were mine
I'd never let you go
And that would be but beautiful I know

6. *Bewitched Bothered And Bewildered

(Rogers / Hart)

I'm wild again beguiled again
A simpering whimpering child again
Bewitched bothered and bewildered am I

Couldn't sleep and wouldn't sleep
Till love came and told me I shouldn't sleep
Bewitched bothered and bewildered am I

Lost my heart
But what of it
She is cold I agree

She can laugh
And I love it
Although the laugh's on me

I'll sing to her each spring to her
And long for the day I can cling to her
Bewitched bothered and bewildered am I

7. *Easy Living

(Robin / Rainger)

Living for you is easy living
It's easy to live when you're in love
And I'm so in love
There is nothing in life but you

I never regret the years that I'm giving
They're easy to give when you're in love
I'm happy to do
Whatever I do for you

For you maybe I'm a fool but it's fun
People say you rule me with one wave of your hand
Darling it's grand
They just don't understand

Living for you is easy living
It's easy to live when you're in love
And I'm so in love
There's nothing in life but you

For you maybe I'm a fool but it's fun
People say you rule me with one wave of your hand
Darling it's grand
They just don't understand

Living for you is easy living
It's easy to live when you're in love
And I'm so in love
There's nothing in life but you

8. *I Should Care

(Cahn / Stordahl / Weston)

I should care
I should go around weeping
I should care
I should go without sleeping

Strangely enough I sleep well
'cept for a dream or two
But then I count my sheep well
Funny how sheep can lull you to sleep

So I should care
I should let it upset me
I should care
But it just doesn't get me

Maybe I won't find someone
As lovely as you
But I should care
And I do

So I should care
I should let it upset me
I should care
But it just doesn't get me

Maybe I won't find someone
As lovely as you
But I should care
And I do

9. *You Don't Know What Love Is

(Ray / De Paul)

You don't know what love is
Until you've learned the meaning of the blues
Until you've loved the love you had to lose
You don't know what love is

You don't know how lips hurt
Until you've kissed and had to pay the cost
Until you've flipped your heart and you have lost
You don't know what love is

Do you know how a lost heart feels
The thought of reminiscing
And how lips that taste of tears
Lose their taste for kissing

You don't know how hearts burn
For love that cannot live yet never dies
Until you've faced each dawn with sleepless eyes
You don't know what love is

Do you know how a lost heart feels
The thought of reminiscing
And how lips that taste of tears
Lose their taste for kissing

You don't know how hearts burn
For love that cannot live yet never dies
Till you've face each dawn with sleepless eyes
You don't know what love is
You don't know what love is

You don't know what love is

10. *For All We Know

(Lewis / Coots)

For all we know we may never meet again
Before you go make this moment sweet again
We won't say goodnight until the last minute
I'll hold out my hand and my heart will be in it

For all we know this may only be a dream
We come and go like a ripple on a stream
So love me tonight tomorrow was made for some
Tomorrow may never come for all we know

For all we know this may only be a dream
We come and go like a ripple on a stream
So love me tonight tomorrow was made for some
Tomorrow may never come for all we know

11. *My Funny Valentine

Bonus Track

(Rogers / Hart)

My funny valentine
Sweet comic valentine
You make me smile with my heart
Your looks are laughable
Unphotographable
Yet you're my favourite work of art

Is your figure less than Greek
Is your mouth a little weak
When you open it to speak
Are you smart

Don't change a hair for me
Not if you care for me
Stay little valentine stay
Each day is Valentine's Day

Is your figure less than Greek
Is your mouth a little weak
When you open it to speak
Are you smart

Don't you change a hair for me
Not if you care for me
Stay little valentine stay
Each day is Valentine's Day

From The Liner Notes:

Some years back an old friend, Jimmy Pierre, gave me a list of songs he wanted to hear me sing. Along with that list was a stack of LP's that included those titles and the various artists who had recorded them. Johnny Hartman and John Coltrane's "Lush Life," Sarah Vaughn's "Round Midnight," Arthur Prysrick's "Don't Go to Strangers" and Dinah Washington's "Drinking Again" are just a few.

The page is stained with wine, coffee, time, and the margins are punctuated with a rating system - stars and notes like "dig Basie" or "dig Cannonball"... "the No. 1 all time jazz standard"...' "Lady in Satin" - All Tunes' ! I treasure this page and will always be grateful to Jimmy for what was to me an enormous vote of confidence. It wasn'r until years later at a session with sideman Cornelius Bumpus that I met Paul Nagel. It was Paul who encouraged me to go into the books and dig out these songs and find my voice in each one. He and the other fine musicians of this quartet were generous guides into a new, intensely satisfying world of expression.

So Jimmy, if you're wondering where you put those records...
